A street-weary former cop tracks a mysterious girl through the crowds and crises of a San Francisco Bay area twenty-five years into the zombie era.

Deceased and Residing in Oakland is a mystery thriller in the tradition of American Crime Fiction, set twenty-five years after the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. San Francisco is a city under siege — it’s heaving with refugees and it’s seething with crime — but it’s still a city. It’s got cops and courts and commerce, and it’s got one burned out cop in particular living a careful life a bay away from the rot that still stalks the suburbs, looking for a heartbeat. All he wants is a quiet life, but when he’s hired to track down the mysterious daughter of one of the city’s elite and the case starts killing his friends, he’s forced on a high-velocity ride among the eccentric citizens and dangerous diversions of fortress San Francisco and all the way back to the last place he ever wants to be.

The hard-boiled narrative is fast and funny and it reads like something you'd expect from Raymond Chandler, if he wrote zombie books

“His nose spread itself across his face like an inadequate police cordon trying to hold back an ugly mob.”

“...a dress that flowed over her body like mist from a dry ice machine. It made me hope for a stiff wind.”

“The accompanying silence only meant that somewhere a saxophone was missing its cue.”

“He looked like a man trying to reach the handle of the knife in his back.”

“And once again the gods of getting punched in the face had picked my name out of the hat.”

“...a relic of an ostentatious past that looks like a myth from down here in the rubble.”

“Exactly. People are always rushing to be the first to point out the sign that we’ve finally screwed things up for the last time. It’s the perverse instinct of the self-loathing man.”

And so on like that, discovering and dispensing with a cast of eccentrics including drug-abusing pirates, one-armed barkeeps, mad professors with a Nietzschean perspective on the zombie apocalypse and suburbanites who are just trying to keep a decent wine cellar.

Wow. My first post-apocalyptic book; zombies and everything. One of the sites which offers free downloads of Kindle books offered several books by indie authors in exchange for a review and, as I usually choose my books by title, this is the one I chose. I couldn't find the author's e-mail to discuss the book with him in private, so I must do it here. I am a fault finder. Editors, by not catching errors, make the author look dumb. All through the book the wrong discreet was used. It is DISCREET not DISCRETE. It is from the word discretion. Also, whenever something happened in the PAST, the word PASSED was used. At least he was consistent.

I usually enjoy murder mysteries and, although there was some detecting in the story, it was hard to follow. There was a great deal of jumping around. It took me several days and one Kindle recharging to finish the book, I was quite happy to see the end.

Sorry, Mr. James, I'm not a fan.

Deceased and Residing in Oakland Philip James 9781520766928 Books Reviews

If Raymond Chandler wrote zombie books - this would be his first ! There's nothing left to say after that.
This was my first zombie tale. It was pretty fun. A combo of mystery and walking dead. With humor and gritty gore too.
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily and honestly reviewing it.

An overall okay read with an interesting premise. It definitely could have been better.
This is a interesting spin on your average zombie story. It's 25 years after the zombie apocalypse and San Francesco is walled off. The daughter of the richest man it the city is missing. Conrad Crete, ex cop, ex Zombie Squad, now man for hire is hired to find her. What he discovers is a twisted bed of lies that lead him to the dangerous places outside the walls and if the dead don t get him the living might. Great read if you enjoy zombie and mystery books.
I was hoping to like this book but unfortunately it had me checking often to see how close to the end I was. The basic story line was good and there was a lot of action, Conrad an ex policeman with the zombie squad, becomes more or less a man for hire, who ends up dealing with way more zombies than he would like. The mystery aspect of the book was a real challenge to figure out, which was great, but unfortunately there was too much dull reading between patches of story and it was confusing in spots because of the wording. I voluntarily agreed to read and review a copy of this book.
3.5- 4 stars

I enjoyed this new take on the zombie apocalypse trope and frankly never thought I'd use the words zombie and funny in the same sentence but this book is both. 25 years after zombies appeared ex-cop Conrad accepts a case looking for the daughter of a rich man in a world where humans live in walled cities. Overall this is a well written book, a bit choppy in pacing (the middle really slowed down) with an interesting premise. I did get distracted by wrong word usage or wrong spellings and the book could have used a good edit or spell check. If you can ignore that then this is an enjoyable read. Recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for voluntary review consideration
Funny and witty take on the whole genre! I'm looking forward to his next offerings.
