Cooking a great dinner for one need not be a hassle.
With tips and tricks on how to buy, store and prepare just enough food for a single serve. Dinner for One, can show you how you can enjoy the meals you love and throw away your frozen packaged dinner lifestyle for good.
Each recipe has been perfectly proportioned for one serve.
Diane Lennon first learned to cook in her Italian grandmother's kitchen, before supermarket chains, before factory farming and mass produced processed foods. A time when you bought your meat at the local butcher and your vegetables at the market or local greengrocer.
She will show how it is possible to cook for one and eat fresh healthy food by buying from and supporting local farmers and suppliers and why the cheapest supermarket processed foods are not necessarily the best for you or for the environment.
Diane Lennon lives in Switzerland. She decided to write this cookbook after searching in vain for a book for the single cook.
Having raised a family and now living happily alone, she is a committed locavore encouraging the support for local Swiss farmers and producers rather than the global corporate model where food reaches consumers through a chain of processors/manufacturers, shippers and retailers.
Dinner for One edition by Diane Lennon Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks
The author, who lives in Switzerland, has raised her family and now lives alone. She has some decent recipes and makes it known that she is giving you her perspective on healthy cooking for one. Cooking for one was completely having to change the way she cooked for a family and is hoping to help others make some healthy changes as well. She avidly supports local Swiss farmers (stated in the book) and has been buying fresh produce and meats since she was a young girl. So this is a way of life for her. I suppose if one were to attempt it here in the States, a Farmer's Market would be a more economical choice.
I do agree that a microwave is a "must-have"...' especially in my kitchen! But considering what I read about the author, I guess it's personal choice. All in all, the book was good if you take into consideration what the author's trying to share.
Happy cooking! :)

Dinner for One edition by Diane Lennon Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks Reviews
I downloaded this book to my Fire hoping for some good recipes.. What recipes I could read were good, but the digital version was bearly readable.. Will not do it again.
great book
this was a freebie, and so i downloaded the e-book. it was a wealth of good cooking and i saved just the recipes i wanted. took the book off my tablet to save space.
While this book is all about cooking for one, the recipes call for ingredients that are not easy to find or to find in small quantity. And for someone whom works, these recipes were very elaborate and time consuming.
I read through the recipes and deleted it from my e-reader.
While there are a lot of basics that are cut down for one, there are also a few new things that aren't in my normal rotation. I like how these recipes require a little more work than just making a chicken wrap. I only wish there were a few more fancy options. I would try more new recipes if I wasn't afraid of wasting food.
I downloaded "Dinner for One" hoping to find recipes that would help me create dishes for the single person. I am very tired of huge amounts of leftovers that generally wind up in the trash. The book did not help me at all. Yes there were some recipes, but mostly things that required too much work for an indifferent cook.
If your intent is the same as mine, perhaps this book is not for you either.
Now to be honest I don't really think the author created the book with the lazy cook in mind. If you are one that thrives on the whole process of getting a meal to the table, then you might find some help.
I am sorry but I had an immediate dislike to this cookbook. Can't really say why but I found the tone of the book a bit grating on my nerves. It might have something to do with the author's admonitions or dislike of the microwave oven. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using a microwave oven (especially for defrosting and reheating make-ahead meals) and is particularly handy for small meals. The microwave oven also saves energy as it cooks quicker and does not heat up the kitchen. Both are good things when you live in the middle of the desert during summer.
The author then goes on to write about important it is to eat seasonally and to avoid big supermarket chains. Sigh...she does admit that city dwellers may have no option but to shop at the supermarket and if they do check the grocery label.
She then offers these two rules for healthy eating
"Don't eat any food you would not have found in your Grandmother's kitchen" followed by "Don't eat anything that is advertised. Whenever was an essential food advertised?"
Sigh...
If we all ate what Grandma cooked we would have never tasted other cuisines or tried new foods. For example I don't think Grandma (at least my Grandma in 1950) would have cooked broccolini or tried eating Pluots. As to advertised food items A bit of commonsense is needed here as some advertised food items are healthy and essential. You have to use commonsense when choosing what to buy. Most money-saving experts recommend you shop using grocery specials that are advertised to save money too.
As to the recipes
Some of the recipes are written in both metric and Imperial measurements. You will have to take this in account when using the recipes in this cookbook.
There is no active table of contents in this cookbook.
Some of the recipes you will find in this cookbook include
Shortcrust Pastry
Creme Fraiche
Jam
Pesto
French-Style Dressing
Lemon Sole
Italian Chicken
Fried Chicken
Balsamic Veal Steak
Beef Pot Pie
Potato Gratin
Bacon and Egg Pie
Carrot and Walnut Cake
Recommend with caveats given.
