Newly revised!

The Long Way Home is the only contemporary travel book on Germany written in English. The author, a dual US-German national of Jewish descent, heads to Germany from New York in order to learn about the German people and German culture. Sent by his wife on a mission to find and bring back a perfect set of antique chairs, he soon finds himself caught up in controversies over German art, politics and the Holocaust, and he experiences a succession of distinctly German social problems

• How do you behave in a nude public bath on coed night?

• What do you say to the woman at the Erotic Art Museum who solicits you for an S&M tour?

• How do you sneak a plastic bear stolen from work of public art past the guards at the Reichstag?

• Do you take up the offer of the stripper dentist to come see her act?

• How do you deal with the communal sense of guilt you encounter over what Germany did to its Jews?

Alan Behr answers all questions, both the serious and the offbeat, with honesty and an eye for nuance. He discovers that, although Germany is a nation that many have written about, few outside the German-speaking world can really claim to know it well. The Long Way Home is the author's attempt at new understanding of Germany. His purpose may be earnest, but if there is one thing that he quickly learns, it is that Germany can be a charming, enjoyable and at times completely funny place to call home.

The Long Way Home eBook Alan Behr

A perceptive, sophisticated piece of "travel writing" (and much more) with a surprisingly nuanced view of today's Germany and Germans from a Jewish American who's grandparents and father barely escaped Nazi Germany in the late 30s. In fact at one point in the book Mr Behr, who has both American and German citizenship, goes so far as to refer to the Germany in which he travels as "my country". The edition is extremely sloppy, however, containing numerous spelling and grammatical errors, misplaced, misused and repeated words, and other "typos". It would have benefited greatly from serious proof reading.
